Good research into the Royal Mail. Sadly, like water, energy, trains, buses etc, it exists to make a profit for its shareholders and obscene salaries for its board members. Clearly a refocus towards service provision (and value for money) is called for - perhaps by giving the regulator real teeth, or by re-nationalisation. Is a bureaucracy to determine the options unavoidable?
Thanks, Cliff. I'm not a fan of nationalisation myself - I remember the 1970s. I think there's a middle way. The problem as I see it is finding the right balance between the carrot of profit and the stick of liquidation. The current political system is all too easily gamed by sharp operators who can engineer large payouts for themselves while their companies languish . Under our panocracy the regulator will be you and me - and I still have most of my teeth!
